Hospital Discharges for Primary Diagnosis of Asthma in Virginia, 2004
-There were 9,460 discharges with a primary diagnosis of asthma (ICD-9-CM 493) in 2004 (VA residents only)
-62% of discharges were for females and 38% for males
-55% of discharges were for Whitles, 38% for Blacks, 3% for Hispanics, and 4% for Other Race
-19% of discharges for children under age 5 and 21% were for adults 65 years and older
-The age-adjusted rate of hospitalization was 12.93 per 10,000 population
-Sixteen of 35 Health Districts had rates above the state rate. The health Districts that had highest rates were: Richmond City (33.4), Cumberland Plateau (29.2), Crater (27.4), Piedmont (24.4), Postsmouth (24.1) and Roanoke (20.2) per 10,000 population
-Total charges for hospitalization for asthma were $96.6 million
-The average length of hospital stay for asthma discharges was 3.61
